You know about catalytic converters for cars, my catalytic converter is designed for the older model wood stoves. When placed in your stove pipe it removes some smoke, creosote and offers better combustion. Reduces wood consumption by at least 1/3. My damper is not treated with special metals, it doesn't become contaminated by what you burn like other catalysts do. The biggest difference between my patent and the 13 other patents, mine does not have to be coated with precious metals to work, making it more affordable.

Our Story

We are  family-owned.  Inventor of patented Callahan Catalytic Refractory Wood Stove Damper: I invented this damper in 1983. Spent 2 yrs building the molds and press. Received US patent in 1987. Sold approx 6,000 in the first 6 yrs. Have had 3 returns. One had lasted 20 yrs.

You can view our damper working in our home business office wood stove. It burns 24/7 for 5 months heating about 1,200 square feet.

In 1983 I bought an old ship metal lathe, it had a 12" chuck. For the next 2 yrs I turned out my molds and built my press. One of my first adds was in Popular Mechanics 1985 volume 162N11 magazine. Sold for $30 post paid.

Callahan Catalytic Refractory Wood Stove Damper

 · In 1642 a wood stove damper was made to control draft and smoke, was made to be mounted in the stove pipe no more than 12"-18" from stove top. Keeping this distance ratio in mind when stoves were built better and tighter the damper would need to be lowered to maintain this ratio. In the 20th century we figured out these dampers were also burning soot, which starts to burn at 440 degrees. My damper is a mass of refractory material operating at 1400 degrees, 4" above the stove top is a great soot burner.

 · The concept of soot reburning through a damper placed close to the stove top is indeed rooted in the principles of thermodynamics. Cast iron dampers can provide similar results when placed correctly, but the efficiency difference noting with refractory material is understandable given their superior heat retention and distribution properties. It can be challenging to explain these principles to people who might not have a background in thermodynamics or stove design. Sometimes a visual demonstration or a simplified explanation can help bridge the gap in understanding. Soot starts to burn at 440 degrees Fahrenheit: By positioning the damper close to the stove top, you ensure that the soot reaches this ignition temperature.The refractory damper operates at 1400 degrees Fahrenheit: This high temperature ensures complete combustion of the soot, leading to cleaner and more efficient burning
